AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) — It was hacked. That’s what the City of Austin said happened when a viewer reached out to EverythingLubbock.com’s sister station KXAN.com about a sign that read “CNN=Fake. Trump 2020.”
The viewer said it was one she saw while driving near the intersection of Parmer Lane and Neenah Drive. An Austin Transportation Department spokeswoman said the board belonged to a contractor, which was on display while they worked on Cap Metro’s MetroRail.
One of the city’s right-of-way inspectors told the contract workers about the sign, that was supposed to read “ROAD CLOSED,” and they determined it was hacked.
It is unknown whether the contractor has any barriers in place meant to deter hackers, and the city does not operate them. The boards could also be rented from a third party.
“Any technological system may be subject to security issues, much like any lock can be opened,” the spokeswoman wrote in an email. “Many of these message boards are app-driven and can be operated remotely.”
