Images  of a billboard on Interstate 40 near Vega went viral on Tuesday, but on Wednesday the billboard was replaced by an “advertise here” sign. It will soon be replaced by a welcome message from the Amarillo Convention and Visitors Council.

The billboard previously said, “Liberals please continue on I-40 until you have left our GREAT STATE OF TEXAS.”

Myhighplains.com contacted Randy Burkett, the owner of Burkett Outdoor Advertising.

Burett said the client who paid for the billboard wanted to take it down, and the client did not realize it would cause so much controversy.

Burkett said he has talked to several outlets like MSNBC, Fox News, and Breitbart about the sign.

Burkett did not disclose who the previous client is. Prior to the client’s decision to remove the sign, a gofundme was set up to replace the billboard. The organizers wanted to change the billboard to say “Texas is for everyone–except bigots.”
