City of Houston releases $1.1B Hurricane Harvey recovery draft proposal

Public comment is now being accepted, on a $1.1 billion Hurricane Harvey recovery plan.

The City of Houston proposal says $600 million would be used for fixing or building homes and $375 million is for apartments.

The money would come from government grant funds.

Experts believe almost 30 percent of homes in Houston were damaged by Harvey flood waters.

Public comment is open until the June 21 with a final vote planned for June 27

The plan would then go to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for approval.

Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush provided an update on where the state is, as we are already in this year’s hurricane season.

“We made progress, but not as much progress as we’d like,” Bush said. We’re in a better position than where we were last hurricane season. Hurricane preparedness comes down to muscle memory.

He also said “it had been over 9 years since Hurricane Ike and Dolly had breached the shores of the State of Texas.”

Bush add’s there are three key lesson’s learned, have their agency prepared before the storm hits, propositioned contractors ready to go, and getting through red tape to qualify constituent for housing project.
