Clovis Woman Arrested After Standoff Wednesday

On Wednesday afternoon, Clovis Police responded to a domestic dispute on the 1000 block of Wallace.

As Officers approached the residence they heard the report of gunfire in close proximity to their position. Officers spoke to residents in the 500 block of East 6th Street and were directed to a residence on the south side of the roadway. Witnesses relayed that a female at the residence stepped out of her home and yelled for some to not “mess” with her. The female reportedly discharged a firearm and went back into her home. The suspect was identified as 60-year-old Maria Martinez.

Officers set a perimeter on the suspect’s home, began making announcements to contact Martinez via a public address system. On the arrival of the SWAT armored vehicle, the SWAT Negotiator tried to communicate with Maria Martinez, a public address system and attempted to call and text her, but did not receive any response from her. An arrest warrant was generated for Maria Martinez and a search warrant was generated for her residence.

That evening, the search warrant was executed after the Negotiator had attempted countless requests for contact via a public address system, 29 phone calls, and 58 text messages. Maria Martinez did not respond to any attempts to communicate with her. Windows to the home were “breached”, broken open and cleared of obstructions. At about 8:46 p.m., Maria Martinez was located by Officers, standing in the kitchen of the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.

Maria Martinez was arrested on the charges of negligent use of a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct and was transported to the Curry County Adult Detention Center.
