A waiter at Saltgrass Steak House in Odessa, said he received a racist message from a customer while on the job.
Khalil Cavil was waiting a table Saturday night, when the guests he had been serving denied him gratuity with a hand-written message at the top of the receipt: “We don’t tip terrorist.”
“My heart just dropped,” Cavil said. “I didn’t know what to say or what to think in the moment but there’s hurt there.”
Cavil said people have made assumptions about his name before, but he doesn’t have any Middle Eastern roots. He’s also a Christian, not a Muslim.
“My dad was in the military and a buddy that he was very close to, served with him. Khalil was killed in an accident, and so my dad just named me after him, one of his best friends,” Cavil went on to say.
Cavil shared a photo of the receipt to Facebook Saturday night, and since then it went viral. He shared the image because he wants to remind people that racism and hatred still exist.
“I just had to think, ‘What would Jesus do in this situation?’”
A statement released by Terry Turney, Chief Operating Officer of Saltgrass, reads: “We stand by and support our employee. Racism of any form is unacceptable, and we have banned this customer from returning to our establishment.”
