DPS says crash near Hereford killed one

The Texas Department of Public Safety on Monday released information about a deadly crash Friday afternoon in Deaf Smith County.  DPS said Laura Hernandez-Cervantes, 34, of Hereford died on the scene.

DPS said Hernandez-Cervantes was driving a pickup truck 4 miles west of Hereford along U.S. Highway 60.  DPS said she made an “improper turn” into the path of an 18-wheeler driven by Cary Shoults, 56, of Sulphur Springs.

DPS said both the pickup truck and the 18-wheeler were going westbound.  The pickup truck was in the outside line.  The 18-wheeler was in the inside lane.

DPS said Hernandez-Cervantes was “attempting to turn left into the center median crossover” from the outside lane.  The 18-wheeler hit her pickup truck on the driver side.

A 10-year-old girl in the pickup truck was not injured according to DPS.  Shoults was also not injured according to DPS.  Everyone involved did wear their seat belts according to DPS.
