The body of an East Texas teenager was pulled from a lake Thursday evening in Henderson.
According to the Henderson Police Department, officials were called to the gazebo at Lake Forest Park around 7:10 p.m. Thursday night after reports of a possible drowning.
The HPD said Jonathan Cano, 17, jumped into the lake to assist another person who was in distress. When he did, two fishermen in the area also went in to help. They were able to save the person Cano originally tried to help. However, they lost site of Cano.
At around 8:20 p.m., Henderson Rescue recovered Cano’s body.
CISD released the following statement on Cano’s death:
“It is at a time like this that reminds us all how precious life is. Today and in the days to come, as our Carlisle students and faculty grieve the loss of our friend and student, there will be counselors available to help anyone who needs assistance in dealing with this loss. They will be available all day in the high school, junior high and elementary buildings. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Cano family. Jonathan was always smiling, respectful, a great athletic team member and an unforgettable young man! Our hearts ache with theirs. Please join us in lifting this family up in prayers now and during the difficult days ahead.”
CISD Superintendent Michael Payne said Cano was a sophomore who played football and soccer for the Indians.
Next of kin has been notified.
