El Paso Police are investigating a stolen handgun recovered at Ysleta Elementary School Thursday morning.

According to a news release, a student reportedly found the 45-caliber handgun and ammunition and brought it to school. School officials took the weapon, secured it, and called school police.

Officials say the gun was reported stolen in 2012 out of Albuquerque. 

According to police, Child Protective Services was notified of the case. Police are reminding parents to educate their children on what to do if they come in contact with a gun:

  • Never touch the gun/weapon
  • Stop what you are doing in the area
  • Leave the area where the gun/weapon is
  • Tell an adult right away

According to a statement from YISD, “the incident is being handled according to the district’s Student Code of Conduct, and the appropriate disciplinary action has been taken.”
