Embezzlement Investigated at Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office

The following is a press release from New Mexico State Police:

On March 30, 2018, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was contacted to investigate allegations of embezzlement involving the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office secretary in Santa Rosa, NM.

The Guadalupe Magistrate Court reported missing bond money which was never submitted by the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.  The missing money resulted in a warrant being issued for one of the individuals who had originally paid their bond.

Through investigation, New Mexico State Police learned that the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office secretary, Sarah Moncayo (35) of Santa Rosa, received bond money on two separate occasions from two separate victims.  After receiving the bond money, Moncayo voided the receipts and stole the money rather than submitting it to the court. The total amount stolen by Moncayo was $2,715.00.   Moncayo later admitted to State Police agents that she stole the money.

On April 4, 2018 New Mexico State Police agents arrested Moncayo for the following charges:

Embezzlement (Two Counts, 4th degree felony)
Tampering with evidence (Two counts, 4th degree felony)
Fraud (One Count, 4th degree felony)

Moncayo was booked into the De Baca County Detention Center. The victims warrant was cleared and the identities of the two victims will not be released by State Police.  No additional information is available.
