Many Valley residents were surprised to see a former Cameron County employee sentenced to 50 years in prison for stealing Fajita meat.
Now attorneys for Gilberto Escamilla, 53, have asked for a new trial. They say the punishment was too harsh for the crime. A motion was filed after the stiff sentence on May 11.
Escamilla pleaded guilty, but he never expected five decades behind bars. He was convicted of stealing more than $1 million worth of fajita meat over nine years, including brisket, pork, and sausage.
The court has yet to decide whether to grant a new trial.
