Family stuck in Carlsbad Caverns elevator for 3 hours plans to return

The family from Michigan that got stuck in an elevator at Carlsbad Caverns says they’re planning to head back to the cave as soon as possible.

They were trapped for three hours more than 700 feet below ground with just one bottle of water and no food.

This is one spring break trip they’ll likely never forget.

“The park service ranger, I wish I knew his name, he rode on top of the working elevator all the way down in the dark 750 feet down to where we were and rode back up on top of the cart in the dark all the way up. I just can’t believe, that man must have nerves of steel,” said Kiersten Gawronski.

Inspection of the elevator that stalled indicated that a worn cable which sends signals to the elevator caused the problem.

That elevator will remain out of commission until the cable can be repaired.
