Former Dallas police officer charged with murder

A grand jury on Friday indicted former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger for murder in the killing of her unarmed neighbor.

At the time, September 6, she told police she mistakenly went to his apartment rather than her own.  She shot and killed Botham Jean, 26.

Guyger was initially arrested on a manslaughter charge three days later.  She posted bond and has been free since then.

Jean was a native of the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia. He had been working in Dallas for an accounting and consulting firm.

Guyger told investigators that after finishing her shift, she returned home in-uniform and parked on the fourth floor of a parking garage.  She thought she parked on the third floor, according to official records.

Guyger found the door partially open and a figure standing inside in the darkness. She said she pulled her gun and fired twice after the person ignored her commands.

Guyger has since been fired from the department and Jean’s family has filed a lawsuit.
