Hobbs Police Release New Details Concerning Deaths of Wife, Husband in Early February

On February 5, 2017, Amanda McGraw, a 48-year-old Hobbs woman, was found dead by family members at her home in the 300 block of W. Coal. At the time of the incident, her death was determined to be not of natural causes and has been under investigation as a homicide by HPD detectives. The Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) in Albuquerque, NM has released the lab results and official autopsy of Mrs. McGraw and determined cause of death to be Homicide by Strangulation.

McGraw’s husband, John McGraw, Sr., age 54, was a person of interest from the early stages of the investigation into Amanda McGraw’s death. He was found later that same evening in a field near his vehicle off New Mexico State Highway 18 near Eunice, NM. The Lea County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) was the responsible agency on the investigation into his death and immediately deemed it suspicious. The OMI has also released the results of the autopsy on Mr. McGraw and determined cause of death to be Suicide by Gunshot.


All evidence uncovered during this investigation indicates John McGraw was responsible for the death
of his spouse Amanda.
