A house fire Sunday afternoon in Odessa killed a 9-month-old boy and critically injured his father.
The fire was reported around 2:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Lauderdale Avenue.
“Upon arrival, Odessa Fire Rescue did see smoke coming from the home. There was one adult who was trying to put the fire out,” said Andrea Goodson, a spokesperson for the Odessa Police Department.
Goodson said three children and one adult were in the home at the time of the fire. Two of the children came out safe. The infant didn’t survive after an officer tried to save him.
The adult inside the home was transported to the hospital. He was then later airlifted to a Lubbock hospital in critical condition. Authorities said the adult is the father of the deceased infant.
A first responder at the scene was also transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation.
“There is very heavy fire damage. There is smoke, heat, and water damage throughout the remainder of the home,” said Goodson.
The Fire Marshal’s Office has been called to the scene to investigate.
University Medical Center in Lubbock said the father was in critical condition late Sunday evening.
