The following is a news release from the New Mexico Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office:

Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Andrea Reeb, announced that [Monday] evening a Curry County jury found Jimmy Maes, age 31, of Clovis, guilty of Aggravated Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer, fourth degree felony.

On August 2, 2017, Maes engaged Clovis Police in a slow speed chase in attempt to avoid arrest on an active warrant.  Maes repeatedly drove into oncoming traffic, endangering other drivers.

The Honorable Matthew Chandler presided over the one-day trial and ordered that sentencing be scheduled at a later date. The State filed paperwork showing that Maes is a habitual offender, which could enhance his sentence by four years in addition to 18 months for a fourth degree felony.

Assistant District Attorney, Claire Adams, prosecuted the case for the State.  Assistant Public Defender, Don Pieper, represented Maes.

Ms. Adams stated, “On behalf of the 9th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, I want to extend our gratitude to the jury members.  Because of their verdict, we can continue our commitment to keeping Clovis safe from dangerous individuals who run from law enforcement.”
