Some residents of Longview are pushing back against a longstanding police department policy.
Right now, officers must be clean shaven, and without visible tattoos.
Sgt. Shane McCarter, of the Longview Police Dept. says “We expect them to be professional in appearance and attire that allows the officers to be uniformed.”
But some are now pushing against the dress code. Like Brittany Patton, who is engaged to a police officer. Earlier this week she started a change.org petition called “Beard the Blue.”
Patton explains, “These people literally risk their lives every single day and I don’t think they should be told you have to look a certain way.”
With more than 260 signatures, the petition is gaining steam. But it may not sway police officials just yet.
McCarter says, “All our policies are reviewed on a yearly basis but at this point this is not one the chief is considering.”
Longview PD says the policy is there so police have have a unified front while representing the badge.
Safety also plays into the no beard policy, according to police. They say officers can work with tattoos. They just need to keep them covered.
Patton doesn’t think that’s fair. She worries the policy is driving officers to seek employment in other cities.
“I think its wrong. Would you like to be told you have to wear long sleeves in a Texas summer?” she asks.
We spoke with some residents who believe times are changing.
Tabitha Howe of Longview says, “I believe people with piercings and tattoos are automatically judged.”
Sherry Smith adds, “There are so many people with piercings and tattoos now I just don’t think its offensive.”
