Emiliano Lopez, 25, of Clovis was sentenced on Tuesday to 30 years in prison for the sexual abuse of his 3-year-old step-daughter.

An official statement said a diagnostic evaluation by the New Mexico Department of Corrections showed Lopez had no remorse.

Lopez pleaded guilty in October of 2016.

The girl’s mother took her to the emergency room after she complained of pain in her private area.  Officials said an exam showed injuries consistent with sexual abuse.

During the sentencing, the judge, Drew D. Tatum, said, “You were a father figure to this 3-year-old child who is innocent, helpless and vulnerable.”

“This is truly despicable, that you caused her a lifetime of pain and distrust,” the judge said. “That is not forgivable.  I have a duty to protect this community from sexual predators.”

District Attorney Andrea Reeb said, “The victim’s family was extremely pleased with this 30 year sentence.”

Reeb also said, “Judge Tatum sent a clear message to this community that those who chose to sexually victimize small children will not be tolerated.”

After his release from prison, Lopez will be required to register as a sex offender.
