Mexican authorities confirmed Wednesday that the body found in a Juarez cotton field Tuesday afternoon is, in fact, the American boy with autism who was reported missing late last month.
The Chihuahua Attorney General’s Office says 7-year-old James Martin Camacho died of hypothermia and he may have been dead for up to 10 days before his body was discovered Tuesday.
The boy’s body was found not far from his grandmother’s home – across the border from Socorro.
As KTSM reported, Camacho went missing on Jan. 21 near the same location. His shoes were found on the riverbank, but authorities could find no signs of the missing boy.
“We didn’t have reports of any other missing boy that fit the description or in this particular area of the city where we were looking for James so we immediately notified the family,” said Jorge Arnaldo Nava Lopez.
Camacho was a native of Seattle, where he lived with his parents until shortly before his disappearance. The boy’s mother lived in a homeless camp and said she believed the boy would have a better life if he left to Juarez with his father, according to an interview with El Diario last month.
Mexican officials believe the boy may have been with someone before dying and say his parents are not being investigated.
