ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Thanks to a microchip, a dog lost in New Mexico was found at Abilene’s Animal Shelter.
The Howell family from Hobbs, New Mexico, said they got a call from Abilene Animal Services saying their dog was at its shelter.
“They said there was was a microchip with my name,” said Krisana Howell. “I said ‘That’s her!’ You know? ‘That’s her.'”
The dog, Scrappy, was adopted three years ago. The Howell’s said they believe she was stolen from their home two years ago.
Scrappy was found only because of a microchip.
“The microchip is very powerful, especially when you keep it updated,” said Abilene Animal Services Director Mirenda Walden. “It’s most powerful when you move or change your phone number [and] you make sure you update the microchip.”
The Howell family was surprised but happy that their dog was found more than 200 miles away.
“You don’t get a phone call of a dog, especially missing for two years. And especially from Hobbs, New Mexico and end up in Abilene, Texas.”
“Hopefully in the future that someone that happens to lose their dog will happen to find the same path like my mom found her dog.”
