A judge in Clovis sentenced Nathaniel Jouett to life in prison on Friday afternoon with eligibility for parole.

The court said Jouett was a juvenile at the time of the shooting, and that was a factor because the U.S. Supreme Court said it must be considered.

Technically, it was two life sentences, but those sentences run concurrently – meaning they run together at the same time.

The life sentences were for the two people who died, Wanda Walters and Kristina Carter, when he shot up the Clovis Carver Library in August of 2017. The court also sentenced him to 40 years for the non-fatal injuries he caused.

Jouett was given credit for serving for the 530 days in custody since the day he was arrested.

Jouett will not be eligible for release until Sept. 15, 2051, he will be 51 years of age.

His conviction cannot be set aside, but he can appeal the sentencing. Earlier in the week, Jouett was allowed the chance to speak in court.

“I wish more than anything, I could take those actions back,” Jouett said. “But I can’t.”
