The following is a news release from New Mexico State Police:
On April 8, 2019 at about 8:39 a.m., New Mexico State Police responded to a bicyclist that was struck and killed by a vehicle in Roosevelt County. The incident occurred on US 70 near mile post 425, just north of Portales, NM.
The initial investigation indicates that a 45-year-old male from Australia was riding his bicycle south on US 70 partially in the right lane of the roadway. For reasons still under investigation a 2016 Ford F-150, driven by a 43-year-old female of Clovis, NM drifted struck the bicyclist from behind. The bicyclist sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of Medical Investigator. The driver of the Ford was uninjured.
Driver inattention appears to be a contributing factor in the crash. Alcohol does not appear to be involved and seatbelts were worn by the driver of the Ford.
