Las Cruces Police said an officer-involved shooting left a 52-year-old man dead Monday morning.
LCPD said officers were called to the 1700 block of Rio Grande Street at about 11:30 a.m. Officers were given a report of a suspicious person, possible armed with a knife.
According to LCPD, investigators believed the suspect barricaded himself in the back seat of a parked car a few blocks from the original location.
LCPD said the suspect was refusing multiple commands to exit the car. The first officer to arrive fired at least one round.
A SWAT team was activated to contact the suspect. But officers found the man unresponsive with at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers also found a handgun in the car.
LCPD said the suspect’s body will be transported to the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office for an autopsy. The officer who shot the suspect will be placed on administrative leave.
No officers were injured in the incident.
