New Mexico State Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Clovis, where one male suspect has died.
The New Mexico State Police identified the male as Aaron Joseph Chavez, 22.
Clovis Police say they responded to a call Monday near Prince Street just before 12:30 a.m. Police said an officer attempted to stop a stolen vehicle when the suspect fled. The officer then chased after him.
“During the foot pursuit the officer discharged his duty weapon. Chavez was fatally struck with gunfire and succumbed to his injuries,” according to the New Mexico State Police.
The investigation is active and open, the New Mexico State police said.
The officer’s name will not be released at this time. The district attorney’s office will also review the case after the investigation is complete.
Chavez’s father said Amarillo Police broke the news to him Monday afternoon.
“It’s pretty tough for me right now to understand that, what I’m going through,” said Clayton Chavez Sr. “It’s a parent’s worst nightmare to wake up and realize you have to bury your son.”
