Officials with the Midland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Friday skeletal remains found in February are connected to the cold case of two teenagers who went missing in 2015.

The remains, which were found near the 5000 block of West County Road 116 in Midland County, were identified as John Iglesia-Alvarez and Ashley Cruz-Rodriguez.

Sheriff Gary Painter confirmed that both teens were killed from a bullet to the back of the head.

It is believed that the suspect is a man that was known to both victims. A potential suspect was out of the country at this time.

Skeletal remains were sent to Tarrant County for further examination, the sheriff said.

Initially in February, Painter said investigators had reason to believe the remains could be connected to the 2015 cold case.
