The following is a press release from New Mexico State Police:

On March 11, 2018 around 7:00 a.m., New Mexico State Police officers were called to a residence on Grove Avenue in Ft. Sumner for a restraining order violation.

Andy Lucero (48) of Ft. Sumner was attempting to enter his ex-girlfriend, Sadie Martinez’s house, and, thus, violating an active restraining order against Lucero. Lucero was able to get into the house and an altercation ensued.

During the altercation a friend of Martinez, Jennifer Hoy drove up to the house and was shot while inside her vehicle by Lucero.  Lucero then fled the scene.  Ms. Hoy was transported to a Lubbock, TX hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents and officers began searching for Lucero.  They were alerted to a fire in Ft. Sumner,  when they arrived they found two structures and what is believed to be Lucero’s vehicle on fire. However, they were unable to locate Lucero.

Through investigation, agents tracked Lucero to a field about twenty miles west of Ft. Sumner near U.S. Highway 60. State Police agents made contact with Lucero and, for reasons that are still under investigation, shots were fired.

Lucero sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Agents and officers were unharmed during the incident.

The NMSP personnel involved in this shooting have been placed on standard administrative leave.  Their names will not be released until all have been interviewed.  This incident is still under investigation with no additional information currently available.  When more information is available it will be provided in a press release.
