WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) – Wichita Falls police officers said a stepfather and his stepson got in a fight with a meat cleaver and garden hoe over rent money, and the stepfather ended up in jail.
Donald Lee Everett, 60, is jailed on $25,000 bond on a charge of aggravated assault family violence.
Police officers were dispatched a little after 7 p.m. Wednesday to the 1600 block of Hamlin Avenue.
The stepson told officers he pays rent to his stepfather Donald Everett and that Everett came to his house demanding the rent payment.
He said he told Everett he couldn’t pay him yet, and Everett then became angry and demanded he pay.
He said he then retreated into his house as Everett chased him and grabbed a meat cleaver and began swinging it at him.
The stepson said he ran out the back door with Everett chasing him and grabbed a garden hoe to defend himself.
He said he hit Everett with the hoe and Everett went back into the house and down the street to his own house.
The victim told officers he had previously been assaulted with a baseball bat by Everett and that he grabbed the hoe because he was in fear for his life or serious injury.
During booking into jail, officers filed an emergency protective order for the victim.
