A wanted suspect died Wednesday after an officer-involved shooting in Hereford.
On August 1, APD SWAT officers received information on a 35-year-old man who was wanted on multiple felony warrants.
The suspect was identified Thursday as 35-year-old Jonathan Joey Mendoza.
According to APD, Mendoza was located at a residence in the 200 block of 6th Avenue in Hereford.
The APD SWAT team worked with DPS and Deaf Smith County Sheriff’s Office and attempted to take Mendoza into custody on the warrants.
Officials said Mendoza exited the back of the residence with a handgun, and when he saw the officers in the back, they said he ran around toward the front of the residence and presented the handgun at officers in the front.
According to officials, APD SWAT officers then shot Mendoza .
He died on the scene.
As per APD protocol, the involved officers will be placed on a mandatory paid administrative leave.
Officers were attempting to apprehend Mendoza on his warrants for Parole Violation – Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon, Assault Household Member – Impeding Breath or Circulation, Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon, and Terroristic Threat.
The Texas Rangers continue their investigation into the shooting and all investigative findings will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office for review.
