Dr. Stan Garrett, a family medicine physician with Covenant says it’s important for parents to bundle up their babies during winter weather.

“If you have them in a carrier or your are carrying them, it’s good to cover them with a light blanket so if the wind is blowing they’re protected,” he said.

And we all know the West Texas wind can be brutal.

“Exposed skin is the one that is most at risk,” said Dr. Garrett, “With the cold, as much as you can, you should cover the skin that includes the face.”

For infants and younger children Dr. Garrett says it’s especially important to cover their head.

“Many children don’t have hair, they need to cover that head because they’re going to lose much of their heat out of the bare skin.”

Even if it’s a hassle Dr. Garrett says do it anyway.

“You got to judge your child and you got to take care of them,” he said.

“Even a smaller child when they don’t want to wear something you got to be the parent put it on them so they stay warm.”

Dr. Garrett says layers are the best way to dress protecting all area’s of the body from the bitter cold.
