Clayton Ray Cummings, 31, was served with paperwork Monday letting him now that he was charged for robbery. Cummings had already been in jail for other charges.
Cummings was accused of a violent robbery of 7-Eleven at 2324 Marsha Sharp Freeway on February 5. An arrest warrant said Cummings took beer without paying for it. The store clerk jumped over the counter to stop him, and the arrest warrant said Cummings hit him in the face. Cummings also pushed the clerk through the front glass of the store. The glass broke.
But the clerk fought back. The clerk had a stick, according to the arrest warrant, and hit Cummings approximately 12 times. Cummings dropped the beer during the altercation and had to leave empty handed. The clerk tried to hold on to Cummings until police could arrive, but Cummings got away.
Police were able to track down Cummings with a license plate number. He denied the allegation when confronted in jail by a police investigator.
He was held Wednesday on several charges, and his bonds totaled $35,000.
