Several residents were evacuated from their homes in North Littlefield Monday night as a fire broke out in a cotton storage facility nearby.
Michael Jordan, the emergency management coordinator for the City of Littlefield, told EverythingLubbock.com Monday night that the Littlefield Fire Department was first called out to the fire at around 8 p.m. Monday evening to the cotton storage facility off of Highway 385. He noted that there was a large grass fire as well as a fire in the cotton burrs being stored in the facility. There are no known injuries reported from this fire.
By Monday night, flames were still burning throughout the area, but Jordan said the fire was contained. Jordan added that he hopes to get the evacuated families back into their homes within the next few hours.
Jordan said there is no word yet on the cause of the fire. He also noted that weather conditions were “favorable” for a fire.
Both the Sudan and Amherst Fire Departments drove in to assist in fighting the fire. Jordan added that this is a very large fire for the City of Littlefield.
A crew on scene was able to see the fire from six miles outside of Littlefield Monday evening. We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
