Students bring foot traffic back to local stores

Today marks the first day back for Texas Tech students on campus. Local businesses, especially those around the campus, say this is what they look forward to after a long winter break.

“A little less stressful because you know you’re going to come in. You know you’re going to have a good crowd always and make a little more money,” said Isaac Lucio, a bartender at Local on Broadway.

With the Tech campus hosting nearly forty thousand students, around one fourth of Lubbock’s population, local businesses prep for their return.

“Recently we had a winter sale we were promoting for when students come back. So it is in their heads that ‘oh there is a sale going on I gotta check this place out when I get back,'”said Chris Perkins, the store manager The Matador.

These businesses count on the students to keep their doors open. Some say it is even nice just to be busy again.

“It is lively again, like people live here,” said Lauren Leihgeber, a sales associate at Indigenous Imports.
