Students at Lubbock ISD, Frenship ISD and Lubbock-Cooper ISD worked together to come up with a hashtag that students can go to if they are in need of peer support.

The hastag is #GR806 and named for the region’s area code.

“It shows that it doesn’t matter what school you go to this can always apply to you and we think its important that we don’t use our school colors to separate us,” Frenship student Lia Kelley said.

The idea behind #GR806 started more than a year ago with students and their respective Superintendent Advisory Groups.  They wanted to students to encourage one another by posting positive messages or photos to alleviate the mounting pressures of high school, regardless of district lines.

“It’s mainly for those who don’t really feel that they are worth it or they have problems at home or they have problems at school and who don’t really feel loved by others so we are trying to reach them,” Kelley said.

Samiah Walker, a student at Estacado, said she’s already seen the impact in can have.

“I’ve met students within the #GR806 that help me with homework help me with things going on at home and everything else,” Walker said. “Through social media if you #GR806 and you need help with something our hope is that someone will see it and reach out and be there for you.”

“We want to be able to support one another as a school system and with our students we want to be able to help our students in finding what those talents are so that they can serve and help one another,” Coronado principal Jerry Adams said.

Students said they hope the hashtag spreads to every school in the 806 area code.

“I want it to get out of Lubbock,” Walker said. “I want it to be within Levelland ISD, Plainview ISD. I want it go everywhere, because I feel like this is a great thing so why confine it to just one small city.”
