The Texas Hunger Initiative has teamed up with a group of partners to host a series of kickoffs for the Free Summer Meals program for kids and teens in the South Plains. Overton Elementary hosted the Wal-Mart funded event for access to three healthy meals a day, seven days a week.

The meals are free to children 18 and younger who come to a Summer Meals site. The food is from the Overton Elementary school nutrition supplier which is approved by the USDA. The school also has recreational activities like face painting, water balloons and bounce houses for the kids.

Sarra Curry, a mother of ten, brought her kids to Overton Elementary.

“I think everybody in the Lubbock has hard time and you know we all go through them and I think having something like this is really good,” Curry said.

Madeline McClure, a Child Hunger Outreach Specialist, helped coordinate the event and recreation activities for the kids at Overton Elementary.

“They can send their kids here all summer long and they are going to get a free meal. They can either get breakfast or lunch here at Overton Elementary,” McClure said.

The program will continue this summer until August 4.
