Residents in the City of Sundown were evacuated Tuesday afternoon because of a grass fire.

The city administrator said the fire started in Yoakum County and spread to an area south and west of town in Hockley County.  The city administrator said 800 or more residents were affected, and those without a place to stay could gather at the practice gym at the school.

Lubbock and most of the South Plains were in extreme fire danger Tuesday.  Wind gusts on the South Plains were measured in excess of 60 miles per hour.
