Amarillo Police were led on a chase Monday morning after a driver allegedly failed to stop for a traffic violation.
A patrol officer tried to pull over an SUV on Southwest 3rd and South Rusk around 6:00 a.m. The driver refused to stop and sped away.
Police said the suspect then began firing shots at the officer in the area of Southwest 3rd and Bellview.
The suspect fled the area and proceeded westbound onto Interstate 40 and continued to fire shots at the officer.
Amarillo Police said the suspect pulled over near mile marker 4 and later near the New Mexico state line and fired
shots at the authorities who were in pursuit.
The chase came to an end near the state line when the suspect was shot in the upper body. The suspect was flown to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Three other passengers from the SUV were taken into custody.
No law enforcement staff or civilians were hurt during the incident.
The Amarillo Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Oldham County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police were all involved in the chase.
