The Sweetwater Jaycees announced that this year was the largest Rattlesnake Roundup in their 58 year history as far as pounds of snakes.

This year the roundup received 24,226 pounds of snakes.

The Jaycees had to stop taking snakes Friday night instead of still buying them Saturday and Sunday due to lack of room for the snakes and lack of money to buy them. he snakes were being purchased for $10 per pound.

The previous record for the roundup was set in 1982 with 18,000 pounds of snakes.

The Jaycees credit the large amount of snakes to the abnormally warm winter and the large amount of rainfall in recent months. This made hunting the snakes easier since they left their dens sooner, and the amount of water meant more food for the snakes, making them large and healthy.

The total number of attendees for the roundup is still not known but the Jaycees did say it was well over 30,000.

“We want to make sure to thank the Nolan County First Responders for helping with the flow of people,” said Sweetwater Jaycee Rob McCann.

The Roundup went from March 10-13.
