Tech Baseball Sweeps Opening Day Doubleheader

Starting pitchers Davis Martin and Steven Gingery picked up where they left off during their freshman All-American seasons.

Martin went six innings and gave up one run on four hits and struck out seven in Texas Tech’s 15-1 season-opening win over Western Illinois.

Gingery did him one better in the Red Raiders 5-2 win over Mississippi State.

The sophomore left-hander surrendered one run on four hits and struck out eight in seven innings of work.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but junior Jose Quezada came in to get the final two outs and help the Red Raiders sweep the opening day doubleheader.

In the opener against the Leathernecks, Texas Tech drove in 15 runs on 13 hits.

Senior first baseman Hunter Hargrove led the way going 4-for-5 with a homerun, two doubles and four runs batted in in the opener.

In game two, freshmen Michael Berglund and Josh Jung drove in the Red Raiders first three runs.

Berglund gave Texas Tech an early 1-0 lead in the second inning with his first career double that scored Zach Rheams.

Jung started the four-run fourth inning with a two-run double to right field that scored Tanner Gardner and Hargrove.

Texas Tech faces Western Illinois at 1 p.m. Saturday and wraps up the weekend against Mississippi State at 3 p.m. Sunday at Dudy Noble Field.
