Texas Tech Athletics announced that its football team will make its fourth annual trip to Midland on Saturday, April 2 for an open scrimmage at Grande Communications Stadium at Scharbauer Sports Complex. The scrimmage will begin at 1 p.m. with gates opening at noon. Admission is free and open to the public.
Last year, Texas Tech held its annual spring football game in Midland as the event drew over 7,500 fans. Tech also held intrasquad scrimmages/practices at Grande Communications Stadium in both 2013 and 2014.
Fans are encouraged to tailgate in the stadium’s parking areas which open at 8 a.m. The event will also feature a children’s play area, photo opportunities with Texas Tech’s mascot Raider Red and additional entertainment hosted by the Midland Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
It is the first of two Texas Tech April athletic events scheduled in Midland as the Red Raider baseball team will play Abilene Christian on Tuesday, April 5 at Security Bank Ballpark. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. that evening.
“We are excited to continue our partnership with the Midland RockHounds, Midland Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and Pro Petro Services,” Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. “We have always had an outstanding fan base here and are pleased to bring these events to the Permian Basin.”
Both Texas Tech events are presented by Pro Petro Services. Pro Petro’s CEO Dale Redman was a three-year letterman on the Tech baseball team from 1981-84.
Texas Tech’s spring football practice begins on Saturday, March 5. Due to NCAA rules, the Red Raiders are allowed 15 days of spring football practices. Tech will also host a Pro Day for its seniors on Friday, March 11.
Texas Tech’s 2016 Spring Football game will be played on Saturday, April 16 at Jones AT&T Stadium. Kickoff will be at noon for the contest, which will be televised live on Fox Sports Southwest. The Spring Football Game will kickoff a Saturday-full of on-campus athletic activities as the Texas Tech Baseball team will host San Diego State at 2 p.m., while the Tech track and field team will host its Red Raider Outdoor Open.
Texas Tech opens its 2016 season at Jones AT&T Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3 against Stephen F. Austin. In addition, Tech’s home schedule features 2015 bowl team Louisiana Tech (Sept. 17), Big 12 Conference opener Kansas (Thursday, Sept. 29), 2015 bowl team West Virginia (Oct. 15), 2015 CFP playoff team Oklahoma (Oct. 22) and Texas (Nov. 5).
