Middle school-age girls interested in STEM will soon have an opportunity to learn about the career possibilities open to them while hearing from a Texas Tech University alumna who knows a thing or two about success.
Texas Tech’s STEM Center for Outreach, Research and Education is teaming with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Lubbock Betty Anderson branch to offer a one-day science-, technology-, engineering- and math-focused workshop for sixth- through ninth-grade girls and their parents. The Tech Savvy Conference is designed to help young girls discover realistic STEM careers and pathways to education while equipping parents to encourage and reinforce the process.
And who could better show girls what’s possible than someone who has paved the way? Texas Tech alumna Ginger Kerrick, a NASA flight director for the International Space Station, will serve as the keynote speaker for the workshop.
Tech Savvy will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 18 on the Texas Tech campus. The registration cost of $5 per person includes breakfast, lunch, a snack and T-shirt. Parents are encouraged to attend, but students also may come with a friend or teacher.
Each participant will select three workshop sessions and one savvy skills session to attend. Schedules and more information can be found online.
