Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced a book signing in Lubbock for Tuesday afternoon. The Tech Student Democrats in response announced a “peaceful protest” during the event.
The book signing will be 3:00 pm at Hastings Entertainment, 8209 Slide Road. The protest will be 2:30 pm at the same location.
“As Governor, Greg Abbott has not been a proper representative for the citizens of Texas,” the Tech Student Democrats said in a written statement.
The statement also said, “He has used fraudulent information in order to defund Planned Parenthood and deprive Texans of healthcare.”
The statement also accused Abbott of perpetuating intolerance of LGBTQ, disbelieving in climate change, “and many more offenses.”
A written statement from Abbott on Monday said, “Governor Greg Abbott will hold book signings in Amarillo, Lubbock and Midland on Tuesday, May 24th, for his new book Broken But Unbowed.”
The Amarillo event was later canceled but the Lubbock event was still to remain on time.
A description of the book on Amazon.com said, “Abbott pens his deeply personal and inspiring life story and proposes a plan to restore America to greatness…”
“Abbott lost his ability to walk when a huge oak tree crashed down on his back, fracturing vertebrae into his spinal cord, leaving him forever paralyzed,” the description said.
“At twenty-six years old, he felt that the future he had dreamed of was gone. But he soon realized that our lives are not defined by our challenges, but by how we respond to them.”
