The Texas Tech Police Department received a 911 call Sunday evening and dispatched officers to investigate an aggravated robbery. Also on Sunday evening, there was a report of an attempted kidnapping and police think the two incidents might be related.

A Texas Tech student was approached by a male with a handgun in the parking lot of Horn Residence Hall, an all-girls dorm Sunday evening at 7:28 according to official statements.

The suspect demanded the student get out of her car and give him the keys. Instead, she screamed and hit the suspect on the head with her hand.

The suspect, who has been thus far identified as a black male, took the female’s purse and car keys. He then ran to a vehicle occupied by three additional other men. The suspect’s car has been described as dark blue, four door cavalier with tinted windows.

The  victim in the attempted car jacking is said to be OK.

Students Monday say they were surprised to hear that the incident happened right outside of a residence hall, and that they consider the university to be a relatively safe campus.

“I was at the library studying and I found out about the incident at around 8 o’ clock after I read the email,” said Jose Romo, a junior finance student at the university. “I was here around 1:00 in the morning that night and walking back to my car that night it was pretty dark so I was kind of on edge about it.”

Emily Tann, a freshman advertising major, also lives at Horn Hall. She says she found out through her roommate that the incident occurred and also received an alert from the university.

“It’s terrifying because I could have been walking back, because I had been out that night at church. It’s crazy to think that could have been me easily,” said Tann.

About an hour before the incident at Horn, a young woman reported an attempted kidnapping outside of Gordon Hall, and honors residence hall also on campus.

She said a vehicle with a similar description stopped in front of her.  The suspect description she gave was also similar to the other incident.  She said a man got out the vehicle and ordered to go with him.  She refused and ran away.

The Texas Tech Police Department and the Lubbock Police Department are continuing to investigate these cases.
