Gov. Abbott issues 8 orders to improve reporting of possible mass shooting threats

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Gov. Greg Abbott issued eight executive orders Thursday in an attempt to better prevent mass shootings. None of the orders mention guns. Instead, the focus is on how to better train law enforcement and the public to identify potential shooters. This comes less than a week after seven people were killed in a deadly mass-shooting in Odessa.

One of Abbott’s demands is that counties more quickly report convictions to the Criminal Justice Information System to make background checks more effective.

“Texas must achieve several objectives to better protect our communities and our residents from mass shootings” Abbott said. “One of those objectives is to marshal law enforcement resources to stop violent criminals before they commit mass murders. But more must be done. I will continue to work expeditiously with the legislature on laws to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals, while safeguarding the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding Texans.”

Gov. Abbott is also expected to release a report next week with findings recommendations following the Texas Safety Commission meetings. The governor formed that commission in addition to the Domestic Terrorism Task Force following the El Paso shooting where 22 people died.
