DIMMITT, TX (NEWS RELEASE) — On May 25, at approximately 2:35 p.m., a Dimmitt Police Department officer answered a call in the 200 block of West Andrews for shots fired. Upon arrival, the officer came under gunfire and took cover behind the patrol car until the Amarillo Police Department SWAT team arrived.
Responding agencies included the Dimmitt Police Department, Castro County Sheriff’s Office, Amarillo Police Department, Deaf Smith County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Texas Highway Patrol and Texas Rangers.
As a precaution, several homes around the area were evacuated and the nearby elementary school was placed on lockdown during the incident.
According to the preliminary investigation, the barricaded suspect continued to fire at law enforcement until the Amarillo SWAT team deployed tear gas. At around 7:40 p.m., the man exited the home and surrendered to authorities.
The suspect was identified as Fabian Resendez, 41, of Dimmitt. Resendez was taken by ambulance to the Plains Memorial Hospital in Dimmitt where he was treated for a gunshot wound, which was not considered life threating, then released to law enforcement.
Resendez was booked into the Castro County Jail for felony attempted capital murder of a peace officer. Texas Rangers continue to investigate the case.
