MIDLAND, TX — The Texas Rangers are investigating and witnesses are speaking out after two Midland Police officers shot a man outside a Tall City liquor store Saturday night.
According to Midland Police, the incident occurred outside of Bill’s Bottle Shop in Midland around 8:00 p.m. Saturday. Police say the man was acting suicidal and he was pronounced dead after going to the hospital.
The following quotes you see in the story are from a witness who didn’t want his name made known to the public.
“I start hearing, all of a sudden, somebody yelling and screaming and just crying real hysterically.”
Midland Police say the man he is describing was acting aggressively outside of the liquor store. Officers were called to the store because
he was walking in and out, while acting suspiciously.
According to Midland Police, and one witness, officers tried calming the man down, but he refused.
“He starts charging towards the cops and the cops back up and they tell him, ‘stop, freeze where you are.'”
Authorities say the man was charging the officers with a box cutter.
“All of a sudden the cops got their guns drawn out and I’m like, ‘it’s about to start happening right here.'”
The two officers shot the man before he got to them.
“Well by the time he made it to the passenger door of the Crown Vic, they dropped him.”
The witness said he heard multiple shots, and the man was dead instantly.
“I heard about 5 or 6 good shots, right down the center mass of the body. He was out like a light.”
When asked what was going through his mind during all of this, this is how he responded.
“It’s just another day in beautiful West Texas.”
Midland Police say both officers are placed on administrative leave, while the case is being reviewed by the Texas Rangers. According to police, it’s believed at one point the victim stole from the liquor store before getting gunned down. The actual shooting happened by some car wash booths, right next door to the liquor store.
