The Chamber Orchestra of the Texas Tech University School of Music will perform a free program of three works at 7:30 p.m. Sunday (April 2) in Hemmle Recital Hall. Ross T. Ipsen, teaching assistant, will direct the evening’s selections.
The first work is Aaron Copland’s “Three Latin-American Sketches.” The sketches contain the musical crossroads of Venezuela and Mexico in “Estribillo,” the Mexican countryside in Paisaje Mexicano” and a dance style from the Mexican state of Jalisco in “Danza de Jalisco.”
The second work is Samuel Barber’s one-act opera, “A Hand of Bridge.” The performance is a collaboration between four student vocalists and chamber players directed by assistant professor of voice Gregory Brookes. The cast consists of two unhappily married couples playing a game of bridge, and the action unfolds as the characters think aloud their innermost desires as they play the game.
The third work is Jacques Ibert’s “Divertissement.” The work draws from music Ibert composed for a comedic play, “The Italian Straw Hat.” The play follows a nervous groom on his wedding day as a horse eats his straw hat and he tries to replace it. “Divertissement” underscores the antics of the play’s action.
