Texas Tech junior defensive back Nigel Bethel announced via Twitter that he intends to transfer from the university. Bethel did not participate in spring practices with the Texas Tech football team. According to Kliff Kingsbury, Bethel was focusing on academics this spring even though he was still running with the Texas Tech track & field team.

The Miami native appeared in 18 games over his career for the Red Raiders, including 12 starts. Bethel finished eleventh on the team in tackles last season with 43 (38 solo, 5 ast), as well as one interception during the 2015 season. He totaled 84 tackles over his two-year career as a Red Raider.

Texas Tech finished 126th in the country, and 112th against the pass, giving up 7.89 yards per pass attempt. Even with the loss of Bethel, Texas Tech still has 12 defensive backs left on the spring roster.
