On Tuesday Texas Tech University shared details with EverythingLubbock.com about its Orientation and Mobility course for the visually impaired.
TTU is one of two universities in the state of Texas that offers the training on how to travel independently.
Alecia Jarrett, a Texas Tech Graduate student, said the class focuses on how to use a white cane effectively.
“We want everyone to know that students who are blind or visually impaired can be independent and they can be mobile. They don’t have to be sat in a room or have someone doing everything with them,”
Jarrett said confidence and independence are the keys to motivating those who are visually impaired to be successful with a white cane.
Rebecca Muzquiz, a Texas Tech Graduate, worked as a secretary for the state when she saw students in the course helping those who were visually impaired. She knew she wanted to make the same impact so she applied.
“I can never personally say I know what it’s like to be blind because I have no idea, but what I do know and what I am learning now are the skills that they need in the future to be successful and that’s what matters to me,” Muzquiz said.
The class of 27 is a five-week class over the summer. Student will continue to learn how to operate a white can indoors, outdoors and through other obstacles like stairs and escalators.
