Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday revealed a government hiring freeze from now through August. The decision impacts Texas Tech.
“The state’s public institutions of higher learning are included in today’s directive from the Governor,” said Chris Cook, Texas Tech’s Managing Director of the Office of Communications and Marketing.
“We are currently gathering information so we can better understand the impact on the university and working with the Texas Tech University System to issue a coordinated response,” Cook said.
There are some exceptions to the hiring freeze.
State agencies can request a waiver from the governor’s office on a case-by-case basis.
The Texas Tribune asked the governor’s office about state universities.
The Tribune reported, “Positions that are funded by money that didn’t come from state appropriations are exempt.”
The hiring freeze was estimated to save the state $200 million.
