Texas Tech University’s Percussion Ensembles and Steel Drum Bands are collaborating with guest artists and student musicians for the spring concert, “Sting’s Ten Summoner’s Tales and More.” The free concert will take place in Hemmle Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (April 18).
The first half of the concert will feature guest percussionist Michael Mixtacki from the University of Texas-San Antonio. The combined percussion ensembles will perform the entirety of Stings’s album, “Ten Summoner’s Tales” (1993). Students Hannah Macgillivray and Jon Ortiz will sit in on bass, Sting’s instrument of choice. School of Music staff member Benjamin Robinette will provide vocals and narration for several of the album tracks.
After an intermission, the Texas Tech Steel Drum Bands will team up with School of Music alumnus Lee Willis and the Steel Drum Band from Monterey High School. They will perform with world-renowned steelpan artist Liam Teague. Teague traveled the world showcasing the musical possibilities of the steelpan and has collaborated with Grammy-award winning artists. Teague’s performance is partially supported by Innovative Percussion.
