Texas Tech University stopped short of using the word “sorry” but did issue an apologetic statement Wednesday concerning a vulgar chant during the Tech football game Saturday against the University of Oklahoma.
Fans in the student section could be heard saying, “F*** you, Baker.” The chant was overheard on the television broadcast of the game.
There were also reports of trash being thrown onto the field from the stands.
Baker Mayfield transferred from the Red Raiders following his freshman year, but Texas Tech blocked Mayfield’s transfer request to Oklahoma. That led to a long, off-field feud between the two sides.
Tech eventually lifted Mayfield’s scholarship ban.
On Wednesday, a written statement said, “Texas Tech University deeply regrets the behavior of some students and fans at Saturday night’s football game against the University of Oklahoma. The behavior displayed is not representative of Texas Tech, its students, faculty, staff and alumni.”
The statement also said, “The Office of the President is proactively working alongside the Department of Athletics, the Center for Campus Life and the Student Government Association to seek solutions and actions to prevent unacceptable conduct at all future events.”
